A great post about the duality of competition and cooperation in our industry. An even better response to the first comment.

Consumers win when competition is fierce in a free market. As a broker/owner, I welcome the competition and will work harder to improve my SEO. Ultimately, the best service will win the most business.

Fair point -- I did indeed do one project for Trulia last year. In answer to your questions --

1) If Trulia outranked me on a search for one of my listings -- in a lot of property searches in our area, Trulia is one of several players that dominate; the others include Movoto, Redfin, and a small local brokerage called Menlo Atherton Realty. When I see that, whether for one of my listings or not, I look at it as fair competition and do my best to improve my own SEO. It doesn't piss me off, though I can certainly see how it would for many people. As pointed out in several of the comments on the original BHB post, out-ranking Trulia (or anybody else) for specific properties isn't really that difficult.

2) Until this whole discussion started, I had no idea Trulia no-followed their property links. I have no reason to believe they treat my listings any differently from anybody else's, but no, I haven't specifically checked.

Dude, you work for Trulia as a consultant as you have properly disclosed so many times.

How would you feel if Trulia outranked you on a search for one of your listings?

And does Trulia maintain its no follow policy with your listings?
