Mary McKnight comes up with the craziest ideas…

Her latest one is the “Yankee Blog Swap” in which certain real estate bloggers trade places for the day on December 19th. 3Oceans is participating, and my counterpart is Nigel Swaby of Salt Lake City Real Estate.

I have to admit I had no idea what a “Yankee Blog Swap” is…or, for that matter, what a plain old ordinary “Yankee Swap” is. Perhaps each blog pair had one person north, and the other south, of the Mason Dixon line? Or maybe Mary McKnight researched each of our backgrounds and paired us accordingly? That had me scratching my head, since I’m pretty hard to classify: I was born in Michigan of Dutch parents, but I lived south of the Mason Dixon line for many years…waaaaaay waaaay south, in fact, technically several thousand miles south and west of where the Mason Dixon line would meet the Atlantic.

Then I figured it out…a “Yankee Swap” is just another term for a “White Elephant Swap.” Knowing Mary McKnight, she probably hasn’t told us all of the rules yet; after all, the original non-blog version of this tradition has people stealing gifts from others with gusto and abandon. Perhaps after we post on our partners’ blogs they’ll get to choose whether to keep it or to steal somebody else’s post in its place?
